Biography of Stéphanie Gaudreau

Since the 90’s, Stéphanie Gaudreau is developing, performing, and teaching Contact Improvisation in Montreal, in the Eastern Townships and also in France.

Stéphanie studied under and drew inspiration from key figures in the CI milieu such as Nancy Stark Smith, Steve Paxton, Kristie Simpson, Simone Fortie, Lisa Nelson, Ray Chung, Martin Keogh and Andrew Harwood. Currently mother of two, her research in motor development in children is nourishing her pedagogy.

Her teaching looks at the experience of the person through the body, based on the founding principles of contact improvisation. She puts special emphasis on awareness of the self through movement in order to develop one’s potential and confidence.

Stéphanie’s contact improvisation classes combine different somatic approaches such as massage, tai-chi, and Authentic Movement.

A little more... Other areas of focus: the joy of movement, moving with clear intentions, spontaneity, how to be a masterful dancer in the here and now, and how to work with the physics of motion with the least effort possible.

She was part of the team who created the Annual Montreal Jam, an event of international scale; the weekly Sunday morning CI classes; and master classes in CI. She has been a member of 2 important collectives: “Montreal Danse Échange” from ’93 to ’95, and Montreal’s PIE collective (Performance Improvisation Exchange).

A certified Massage Therapist, Stephanie has maintained a private practice for over 10 years. She has deepened her knowledge through studying Osteopathy and the professional training program of the Feldenkrais Method.
